The Lascal KiddyGuard Retractable Gate

Are you a parent or a grandparent that doesn’t want their baby gate to be there all the time? Then the Lascal KiddyGuard Gate is for you. When not in use the gate rolls up so it is out of the way, it virtually disappears. It can be used in a multitude of locations; at the top or bottom of the stairs, in between rooms, in the doorway of a balcony or terrace, even outdoors. The gate can extend to 51” so it’s great for those larger doorways, like in between the kitchen and playroom. Don’t be fooled by the mesh material it can actually hold up to 225 lbs. The KiddyGuard is really easy to use. Unlike the other gates I only need one hand, so I can hold the baby and still open the gate without having to put him down. It also makes me feel safe when he is playing around the gate, because if he did miraculously figure out how to open the gate by himself it would let me know by it’s clicking sound, warning signal. Another great safety feature is that the gate locks when open and closed so he can’t play with it. Like I said before it is a great gate, especially when you’re having a dinner party and you don’t have to constantly open and close the gate for your guests. My mother in law also loves the gate because she can have it closed when the grandkids come over and as soon as they leave she can open the gate so she has her stairway back. There are no metal doors that she needs to prop open and no bar that she can trip over. All around it has been a success. Click here to read more about our KiddyGuard Retractable Gate.

This September marks the 25th anniversary of Baby Safety Month, sponsored annually by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). This year, JPMA is helping educate parents and caregivers on the safe selection and use of child restraint seats by providing valuable information for keeping baby safe in the car. An important responsibility begins with selecting a child car seat and using it properly from the moment you bring the baby home to every car ride after that. All 50 states have laws that require the use of a car seat. All car seats manufactured today must be designed to meet stringent safety standards set by the Federal government. In fact, child restraints sold in the United States are required to satisfy the rigorous performance standards established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and are certified by their manufacturers as compliant before they can be offered for sale. From rear-facing infant seats to forward-facing car seats to booster seats, there are more options available than ever before. There is quite a bit to consider when choosing the product best suited for you, your baby and your vehicle. A few of the more popular brand and JPMA approved car seats we like to recommend to customers is the Sunshine Kids Radian car seats and Britax line of car seats. There is an abundance of material available today for parents and caregivers looking for safety information regarding child restraint seats. This year's Baby Safety Month campaign and the information contained on this Web site provide insight into selecting and using the right car seat to make every car ride with your little one enjoyable. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to read through the safety tips, and a special section just for retailers provides ideas and helpful hints for promoting Baby Safety Month in-store. We invite you to celebrate Baby Safety Month 2008 This article was adapted from the JPMA website.

Uppa Baby Easy-Fit Car and SUV Sunshade

The product of this week is the “Uppa Baby Easy-Fit Car and SUV Sunshade”. It's the first sunshade that I have purchased that has not fallen off my window as soon as I start to drive. As a car seat technician I know how important car safety is. One of our biggest concerns is that someone may get into an accident and all the toys and things in the car will come flying forward. Just because something seems to be light, just imagine how much of a punch it packs when it comes flying at your head at 40-60 miles an hour. I don't think you would like that. But this sunshade has 10 suction cups holding it onto the window. It's not going to detach and come flying at you during a crash. Some of the features include: SPF 5 protection- blocks 80% of sun's harmful rays

A Stretchy mesh material that allows flexible window coverage up to 17 x 28"

10 Easy attach suction cups. 4 Patented, corner super-grip suction cups that screw onto the window, 6 side suction cups for extra strength.

If you have become really frustrated with those other sunshades or if you are looking to purchase one for the first time, this is my #1 suggestion.

The Itzbeen Mommy Digital Counter

How many new moms out there are so sleep deprived that they don’t know what day it is, let alone when they last changed their baby’s diaper? Well the Itzbeen is here to save you. It is a great little electronic device that will remind you when was the last time you feed the baby, which side you last nursed him on, when you changed his diaper, how long he’s been sleeping and anything else you need to remember, like when you last gave him his medicine. Each action has it’s own button that you just push and it will start a digital timer. It’s great features include a night-light and a backlit display that allows you to see at night or during nap time when the room is dark, and optional timer alarms which allow you to set an alarm for each timer. When the time limit is reached, the button lights up and an alarm will go off. It is battery operated and has a clip attached to it, so you can just throw it in your diaper bag and go. Seriously this is one of my favorite products that has saved my sanity. I recommend it to every sleep-deprived parent. To purchase the Itzbeen click here.

The New Phil & Ted's Dash

The new Phil & Ted’s Dash has finally arrived! The improvements that they made on the stroller are minimal but great. The first difference is that when you close the stroller it locks by itself, much like the vibe, but a lot easier. The second difference is the fabric the sport has a more canvas material the new Dash has more of that parachute material. I’m thinking that it will be a lot easier to wipe clean. The third difference is the brake. The way that you operate the brake is by adjusting the handle bar height. The two lower “heights” will lock the stroller and all the other heights will release the brake and you can also adjust the handle bar height. The only negative part about that is that now my two year old can’t push the stroller. The fourth difference is the foot well, while it’s not as deep as the sport; it is now lined with rubber, like the Vibe. Another plus for keeping your stroller clean. The fifth difference is that the Dash’s seats are a little bit more cushioned. Not as cushioned as the Vibe but definitely an improvement from the harder sport’s seat. The Dash also comes with a plastic back flap that can be attached to the back of the stroller to help protect your child from bad weather. The fold on the dash is also great. It’s located very conveniently by the handle bar so you don’t have to bend down to fold your stroller. It is a two handed fold, but in no time it will be a piece of cake. All in all, the new Dash is a great stroller especially if you have a toddler and newborn. It comes in two different colors; black & gray, and red & a coral color (but not as bright). I give the Dash an A++. Click here to see our Phil & Ted's Dash stroller and other Phil & Ted's products.

It's potty time! The Cushie Step-Up Padded Potty Seat with Step Stool By Mommy’s Helper.

Much to my delight my two year old son has shown an interest in potty training. Now we’re not up to underwear or sitting on the potty every hour, but every morning before we change into a new diaper and every night before our bath he sits on the potty. When asking for advice I got many different suggestions but the best one was to use a cushion potty. So that is what we did. After comparing many different ones we decided on the Cushie Step-Up Padded Potty Seat with Step Stool by Mommy’s Helper. It’s an awesome seat. My son loves the fact that he can you the “ladder” to get on and off by himself. And I love the fact that the seats folds down so I can store it. Out of all the seats that I looked at, this one seemed to be the best for those beginner potty goers.

The Skip Hop Triple Bottle Bag a Great Multifunctional Bottle Bag

The product that I am reviewing today is the skip hop triple bottle bag. I actually don’t use it as a bottle bag anymore. I now use it as a snack bag for my toddler. When my son was a baby I used it for the intended purpose as a bottle bag. Then once my little boy turned 2 I realized that I didn’t really need to bring a lot with me when we went on our outings. The most important things were a drink, some snacks and a few diapers and wipes. Well I didn’t want to tote around my big diaper bag and my purse so I came up with the Skip hop. The large insulated pocket keeps his drink cold and his snacks from melting. And there are two pockets on the outside for his diapers and wipes. Another great feature is the ability the bag had to clip onto a bigger bag, transform into a knapsack or you can just throw it over your shoulder like a pocketbook. My little one loves wearing it as a knapsack on his back. Were all happy at the end of the day. Just one more product that was able to grow with my baby into his older years.

The JJ Cole Essentials Blanket A Great Travel Blanket

The JJ Cole Essentials Blanket is a very versatile blanket. If you’re going to the beach, lounging around the backyard, or having a nice picnic at a park, this blanket will “cover you”. This compact blanket is as easy to roll back up, as it is to open it. It has a great carrying handle that allows you to take the blanket any place. The purpose of the blanket is to keep baby safe and comfortable while outside but it’s actually big enough for a 5’4” person to lie across it, and it’s padded. Unlike a lot of those other blankets that you buy for outdoors, you would never realize that you are sitting on grass, because it’s not poking up through the blanket. This is my favorite travel blanket, for it’s compact size and it’s comfort.

Cloud B’s Twilight Turtle A Great Night Time Activity

Today I will be reviewing a product that my 2 year old loves and has helped with bedtime from day 1. I’m talking about Cloud B’s twilight turtle. The turtle projects different constellations on my son’s ceiling. There are 3 different light color choices: blue, green and yellow. There is no problem interchanging between the colors they each have a button on the bottom of the turtle. You just push the color you want. What’s so great about this “night light” turtle is that it has a 45-minute timer. So we read a book and then do our star routine. It gives my son something to stare at while trying to drift off to sleep. The turtle turns off by it self and if my son is still up when it turns off he knows that it’s really time to go to sleep. This wonderful turtle also comes with an easy to follow star guide so it’s easy to pick out the different constellations. It comes in either a twilight turtle or the twilight ladybug. Both project the stars but the ladybug has different light colors.

Booster : It's the law

Booster : It's the law Tough Md. rules on restraining children as old as age 7 in cars take effect Monday By Josh Mitchell and Kelly Brewington Sun reporters June 25, 2008
As a child, Mary Canaan spent family road trips crammed with four siblings in the back seat of her parents' old Monte Carlo. No one used seat belts. And child safety seats? Practically unheard of."I remember we used to put a piece of luggage in the back seat and that's what I used to sit on," said Canaan, of Pasadena, who now makes sure that her young grandchildren are always buckled up.Starting Monday, Maryland will enforce one of the strictest child-passenger safety laws in the country, requiring children as old as 7 to be fastened in booster seats while riding in cars. The current state law requires children 5 and under to be in a child safety seat.
State officials are launching an awareness campaign today, starting with a demonstration of car seats at a media gathering in Rockville.More and more states are mandating car seats and boosters for children old enough to be in grade school. Eighteen states currently require safety seats for children up to 7.Child-safety advocates point to research showing that the seats drastically reduce child deaths and injuries resulting from automobile crashes, the leading cause of death among children over age 3."There's nothing more important that a parent can do today than to make sure their children are properly buckled up in their car," said Del. William A. Bronrott, a Montgomery County Democrat who pushed for the new law. He likened requiring child safety seats to administering a cure for a disease: "Not to apply that medicine or prescription for health or safety is, in effect, malpractice."Not all people favor such laws. Critics say they represent a government intrusion on parenting."Parents know what's best for their children, and I think the state is trying to usurp their authority," said state Sen. Janet Greenip, an Anne Arundel County Republican who voted against the measure.Car safety seats, which cost about $30, range from rear-facing and forward-facing seats for infants and toddlers, to booster seats designed for older children.Maryland for years has required safety seats for children younger than age 4, and since 2003, for children younger than 6.The new law, which the General Assembly passed overwhelmingly this year, will require safety seats for children who have not reached their eighth birthday. It exempts children who are 4 feet 9 inches tall or weigh 65 pounds. Violators will face a $25 fine.Advocates say the devices save lives. "They are incredibly effective, and there's a lot of research on the issue," said Jackie Gillan, vice president of the Washington-based Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. She pointed to research by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia showing that the use of a safety seat, which is strapped into a vehicle, reduces a child's risk of injury by 59 percent.Maryland has seen a drop in the number of children injured in car crashes since it began requiring safety seats for 4- and 5-year-olds in 2003.In 2006, the last year for which statistics were available, 827 children were injured and four were killed in vehicle crashes, according to the State Highway Administration. That is down from 1,069 injuries and six deaths in 2002. State officials say other factors may have contributed to the decrease.Parents generally favor stronger child passenger safety measures, surveys show.In the parking lot of the Maryland Zoo yesterday, parents moving their kids in and out of car safety seats voiced supportGavin Bayne of Dundalk said that he and his wife, Jennifer, recently bought a safety seat that will accommodate their 20-month-old son, Quillan, for years to come."We've already discussed keeping him in the car seat for as long as possible," Bayne said. But some parents said that while they support the law, they wonder if American society has become too cautious."Living overseas, you see that Americans are more cautious with everything," said Jacque Seybold, who recently returned to Cockeysville after two years living in Bangalore, India, with her three children and her husband, who was sent there by his employer, IBM."We're the only ones with antibacterial wipes and worried all the time about germs. In India, the only people we saw with car seats were Americans. ... You do need to be careful, but sometimes I worry we go a bit overboard."Seybold said she supports the new law, drives safely and ensures that her children buckle up. After leaving the zoo yesterday, her 4-year-old son George dutifully climbed into his car seat while enjoying a lollipop.Seybold wonders, however, how older children will adapt to booster seats."My middle child is 9, and if I told her to sit in a car seat at 8, she'd say that's a little embarrassing," Seybold said. "But if that's the law, it's the law."According to guidelines issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, children who outgrow their forward-facing seats - usually at about 4 and 40 pounds - should ride in booster seats. The agency says seat belts fit properly when they lie across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt fits across the chest. That's generally when children may use adult seat belts. As she placed her 7-month-old daughter, Megan, into a pink-and-brown car seat, Amanda Vogel, 23, of Essex said child-safety seats can be a hassle because of the space they take up but, "It's worth it.""It keeps them a bit higher, away from the strap. Plus, I can see them better," Vogel said. But her 6-year-old nephew Gage Flanery was adamantly opposed to having to ride in a booster seat. "I'm a big man," he said, chewing on a chocolate chip cookie. "Car seats are for babies."""He says everything is for babies," Vogel said, exasperated. "He always wants to sit up front. But no way."
The booster that is featured is the Sunshine Kids Montery Expandable Booster.

Night Light Problem Solved! Mobi Tyke Light

Most parents probably have the same problem that I do, in regard to my child’s night light. When putting my son to sleep there can be no light or he will be distracted and won’t fall asleep. But if he wakes up in the middle of the night and his room is pitch dark then he screams. After searching for many months I finally found a solution the Tyke Light. It’s this cute little light that my son can carry around if he needs to and it comes in great vibrant colors. It has a rechargeable battery that will last for 10 hours and it has 3 different settings, dim, bright and a timer. The timer will start off bright then 15 minutes later will dim then 15 minutes later it will shut off. I love the timer feature because we turn the light on at the beginning of his bedtime routine and he knows that when the light shuts off it’s time to go to sleep. After he falls asleep I then I turn the light on dim and it lass all night, well at least 10 hours of it. This is a great product for a great price. Click here to purchase the Tyke Light

The DadGear Knapsack a Great Travel Diaper Bag

The summer months are a great time to travel with the family. But packing and the actual traveling makes people a little nervous. Well there is a great backpack on the market that will hopefully make both the packing and the traveling a little easier. It’s the DadGear knapsack. Don’ let the dad part throw you off. Moms love these great backpacks as well. They are specifically geared towards dad with the solid colors and the large sized pack – is designed to fit a man's frame with an 18" tall back panel. It is one of very few, if not the only, diaper backpacks sized large enough for either parent. The backpack has many different compartments. The best compartment is on the front; it’s a wipes case that has easy to access wipes. On both sides there are 2 zippered pockets that are large enough for a bottle in each. On the top there is also a small zippered pocket, its intention is for diapers so that they don’t get lost. I like to use it for dirty or wet clothes, this way they are separated from everything else. There are 2 more pockets, one is a large pocket with a changing pad in it. I like to throw in my diapers, extra wipes, and sanitizer in there along with my diaper baggies, to tie up those smelly diapers. The last pocket is the main pocket. This pocket is huge. The zippers also offers a great feature, it unzips all the way to the bottom of the bag so I don’t need to mess up my things that are packed on top of the thing that I need. Do you ever realize how that ends up on the bottom of the bag? The last great feature that I found was the stroller straps, they are on both sides of the bag. All in all this is my favorite traveling diaper bag it’s big enough for everything and makes finding things a snap. To check out the Dadgear Backpack click here

3 in 1 Zoobie Pets

Yesterday we received an awesome new product, Zoobie Pets. These really cute animals start off as stuffed animals, and then turn into a pillow and then a detachable blanket. After you unzip the blanket from the animal you then have both the animal and a large yummy soft blanket. When I brought the giraffe home to “test” my entire family fell in love, even my son who is not a stuffed animal type of boy. The Zoobie Pets are great for travel especially when you have limited space in your suitcase. They also make great gifts. I hope everyone enjoys them as much as my family did. Keeping Babies and Children Cool

With the hot weather bearing down on us, parents and caregivers really need to keep the kids cool and hydrated. Here are a few tips that will help you do just that. The first thing that you have to keep in mind is that babies and children overheat quickly in hot weather. In order to prevent dehydration make sure to give babies and young children extra drinks, even if you’re inside. If you have an older child you can also offer them homemade sugar free or low in sugar freezer pops. They make great ones that use fruit juice instead of sugar. We don’t need an overly bouncy kid on a hot day. Breastfeed babies should be feed more often. Moms don’t forget to have plenty of fluids yourself including a cool drink at every feed. Bottle feed babies should be offered extra cool boiled water after the bottle. The next thing you could do is when you do go out, dress them in cool clothing and use sunscreen. Last but not least, when it’s time for their nap make sure that their room is kept cool. If you do notice that your child or babies is suffering from dehydration or heat exhaustion contact your pediatrician. Some Symptoms of Dehydration are; thirst, fatigue, irritability, dry mouth and feeling Hot. If these symptoms are ignored, heat exhaustion or a heat stroke can occur. 1 1 webMD.com
